Large Eddy Simulation of Externally Induced Ingress about an Axial Seal by Stator Vanes

Turbine inlet temperatures in advanced gas turbines could be as high 2000 °C. To prevent ingress of this hot into the wheelspace between stator and rotor disks, whose metals can only handle up to 850 °C, rim seals sealing flows are used. This study examines abilities large eddy simulation (LES) based on WALE subgrid model Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) SST predicting a rotor–stator configuration with vanes but no blades, experimental data for validation. Results were obtained an operating condition, where ratio external Reynolds number rotational is 0.538. At both LES RANS found correctly predict coefficient pressure, Cp, located downstream upstream seal, was able effectiveness. shows Cp by itself inadequate quantifying externally induced ingress. unable effectiveness because it significantly under predicted pressure drop path along axial direction, especially about seal region. affected difference across radial which ultimately drives
